==Creating a new page==

Pages can be created from different areas of the BlueSpice Galaxy using the '''+ symbol'''. The location of the + symbol determines the type of page you create:
==Creating a page==
* The + symbol in the header creates a new page.
'''To create a page:'''
* The + symbol next to a page name in the main navigation creates a new subpage of that page.<br>

'''To create a page''':
#'''Click''' the + button in the [[Manual:Extension/BlueSpiceDiscovery|Header]]. A dialog window opens.
# '''Click''' the + symbol in the header or next to an existing page in the main navigation. A dialog window opens.
#'''Enter <nowiki/>'''a page name. If th'''''<nowiki/>'''''e page already exists, it will be listed under the text field. If you want to create the page in an existing [[Manual:The concept of namespaces|namespace]], add the namespace name as a prefix, followed by a colon. Example: <code>Manual:Visual editing</code> [[File:Manual Create pages 1748245897327.png|alt=Dialog field with the new page name "Community"|center|thumb|Create a new page]]
# '''Enter''' a page name. If a page name with this name already exists, it is displayed as a suggestion below the text field.
#'''Click''' done.
# '''Click''' ''Create''.
#'''C''<nowiki/>''hoose''' ''Blank Page'' or a page template if your wiki offers a selection page templates page as the next step. This step is omitted if no page templates are available. The page now opens in edit mode.
# If available, '''choose''' whether you want to start with a ''Blank Page'' or use a page template. Templates provide a predefined structure for specific types of content.
#'''Save''' the page.  After saving the page for the first time, the page exists in the wiki. Click the edit icon of the page to switch back to edit mode.
# The new page opens in edit mode. '''Add''' your content and save the page to make it available in the wiki. <br>

Most pages are created in the main namespace. Other namespaces, such as '''Controlled document''' or '''Minutes''', are used for specific types of content and do provide dedicated creation options via the different dashboards.

If you want to change the page name later (e.g., to store it in another [[Manual:The concept of namespaces|namespace]]), you need to [[Manual:Rename and move pages|move]] the page.
*'''Title choice:''' Meaningful page names help users understand the purpose of a page and make information easier to find. Choose clear and concise titles that describe the content of the page. Single words can work well for general topics, while short phrases are often useful when they provide more context. Avoid overly general or unnecessarily long page names, as page names are used in links and form part of the web address of the page.

*'''Special characters:''' The following characters cannot be used in titles: <code>{ } &</code><code>? < > \</code> and <code>,</code> . You can find more about this at [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Page_title?action=view Mediawiki].
==Adding subpages==
*'''Spelling:''' When linking to an existing page, use the exact page name to ensure that links point to the correct content. For example, <code><nowiki>[[Hello world]]</nowiki></code> and <code><nowiki>[[Hello World]]</nowiki></code> can refer to different pages. Pay particular attention to spelling when creating links manually.
To create a [[Manual:Subpage|subpage]] for the current page, select the ''New subpage'' link from the ''New'' menu.
==Renaming and moving pages==

As information develops, existing pages may need to be renamed or moved to a different location. Use the move function for existing pages instead of creating a new page with the desired name. <br>

For details about renaming and moving pages, see the section on renaming and moving pages.
The subpage is then created  as page <code>current page/subpage</code>, e.g. ''VisualEditor/Tables''. If a page has subpages, the path is displayed via the breadcrumb navigation at the top of the page. The character <code>/</code> is only used to create a subpage. This means that you cannot create a wiki page called ''When/how to take a vacation'' as this will result in a main page ''When'' with its subpage ''how to take a vacation''.
==Using subpages==

Subpages help organize information within a specific topic. A page can have multiple subpages that provide additional levels of structure, for example by separating a general topic from more specific information. <br>
==Page name conventions==
A subpage is created by adding the subpage name after the existing page name, separated by a slash (<code>/</code>). For example, a subpage called ''Tables'' created from the page ''VisualEditor'' is displayed as ''VisualEditor/Tables''. The slash character (/) should therefore not be used as a regular character in page names. The page hierarchy is shown in the breadcrumb navigation at the top of the page.<br>

==Other ways to create pages==
*'''Title choice:''' In a wiki, titles are very important. In wikis with many entries, it happens that authors set links to pages that they consider important in the context of their entry. Single words work well, but short phrases like "why wikis work" can also be goood page names. In addition, meaningful page titles also make it easier for readers to find their way around and to search for an article using the title search.
In addition to the standard creation options, there are other ways to create pages depending on the configuration of your wiki:

*'''''Create page'' content droplet:''' Editors can provide predefined page creation options using the ''Create page'' content droplet.
*'''Namespaces:''' To create an <span class="mw-lingo-term">article</span> in another <span class="mw-lingo-term">namespace</span>, its name must be preceded by the <span class="mw-lingo-term">namespace prefix</span>, i.e. <code>namespace:articlename</code>. An article name can exist multiple times in the wiki as long as it is in different namespaces.
*'''Red links:''' While editing a wiki page, you can create a link to a page that does not yet exist. These links are displayed as red links and provide a direct way to create missing content. Selecting the link opens the new page for creation.
*'''Special characters:''' The following characters cannot be used in titles: <code>{ } & ? < > \</code> and <code>,</code> . You can find more about this at [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Page_title?action=view Mediawiki].
*'''Browser address bar:''' You can also create a page directly from the address bar of your web browser by replacing the title of the current page with a new page name. When you confirm the address, the new page opens for creation.
*'''Spelling:''' When linking to an already existing page in source edit mode, you should pay attention to the exact spelling. For example, if you enter <code><nowiki>[[Hello world]]</nowiki></code> instead of <code><nowiki>[[Hello World]]</nowiki></code>, links to two different pages are created, because the page names are case sensitive. Only the first letter of a (parent) page is case-insensitive. Subpage names are completely case-sensitive.

== Alternative options for page creation ==
There are other handy ways to create a page in the wiki:

*'''Redlink:''' If you are currently editing a wiki page, you can directly select a text passage and set a link to a non-existent page. This creates a red-formatted link (redlink) for which there is no wiki page yet. The non existing page is then also listed on the special page <code>Wanted files</code>.
*'''Browser address bar:''' You can also create a page directly from the address bar of your web browser. To do this, simply replace the title of the current page with a new page name. If you then press Enter, the new page will open.
*'''[[Manual:Extension/InputBox|Inputbox]]''': Input field that can easily be added to any page that includes predefined parameters to ensure the page is created in a particular namespace or using a particular page template.
*'''[[Reference:Page Forms|Form]]:''' In BlueSpice pro, there is also the possibility to create pages using forms. This has the advantage that you can pass different page parameters, such as a page template or various template parameter values to a new page during page creation.

Before creating a new page, consider where the information belongs and whether a suitable page already exists. Using the existing structure of the wiki helps avoid duplicate content and keeps information easier to find and maintain.

Creating a new page

Pages can be created from different areas of the BlueSpice Galaxy using the + symbol. The location of the + symbol determines the type of page you create:

  • The + symbol in the header creates a new page.
  • The + symbol next to a page name in the main navigation creates a new subpage of that page.

To create a page:

  1. Click the + symbol in the header or next to an existing page in the main navigation. A dialog window opens.
  2. Enter a page name. If a page name with this name already exists, it is displayed as a suggestion below the text field.
  3. Click Create.
  4. If available, choose whether you want to start with a Blank Page or use a page template. Templates provide a predefined structure for specific types of content.
  5. The new page opens in edit mode. Add your content and save the page to make it available in the wiki.

Most pages are created in the main namespace. Other namespaces, such as Controlled document or Minutes, are used for specific types of content and do provide dedicated creation options via the different dashboards.

Choosing a page name

  • Title choice: Meaningful page names help users understand the purpose of a page and make information easier to find. Choose clear and concise titles that describe the content of the page. Single words can work well for general topics, while short phrases are often useful when they provide more context. Avoid overly general or unnecessarily long page names, as page names are used in links and form part of the web address of the page.
  • Special characters: The following characters cannot be used in titles: { } &? < > \ and , . You can find more about this at Mediawiki.
  • Spelling: When linking to an existing page, use the exact page name to ensure that links point to the correct content. For example, [[Hello world]] and [[Hello World]] can refer to different pages. Pay particular attention to spelling when creating links manually.

Renaming and moving pages

As information develops, existing pages may need to be renamed or moved to a different location. Use the move function for existing pages instead of creating a new page with the desired name.
For details about renaming and moving pages, see the section on renaming and moving pages.

Using subpages

Subpages help organize information within a specific topic. A page can have multiple subpages that provide additional levels of structure, for example by separating a general topic from more specific information.
A subpage is created by adding the subpage name after the existing page name, separated by a slash (/). For example, a subpage called Tables created from the page VisualEditor is displayed as VisualEditor/Tables. The slash character (/) should therefore not be used as a regular character in page names. The page hierarchy is shown in the breadcrumb navigation at the top of the page.

Other ways to create pages

In addition to the standard creation options, there are other ways to create pages depending on the configuration of your wiki:

  • Create page content droplet: Editors can provide predefined page creation options using the Create page content droplet.
  • Red links: While editing a wiki page, you can create a link to a page that does not yet exist. These links are displayed as red links and provide a direct way to create missing content. Selecting the link opens the new page for creation.
  • Browser address bar: You can also create a page directly from the address bar of your web browser by replacing the title of the current page with a new page name. When you confirm the address, the new page opens for creation.
