Before creating a new page, consider where the information belongs and whether a suitable page already exists. Using the existing structure of the wiki helps avoid duplicate content and keeps information easier to find and maintain.

Creating a new page

Pages can be created from different areas of the BlueSpice Galaxy using the New content button. The location of the + button determines the type of page you create:

  • The New content button in the header creates a new page.
  • The New content button next to a page title in the main navigation creates a new subpage of that page.

Create a page:

  1. Select the New content button in the header or next to an existing page in the main navigation. A dialog opens.
  2. Enter a page title . If a page title with this title already exists, it is displayed as a suggestion below the text field.
  3. Select Create.
  4. If available, select an option from the card layout. To create a page without predefined content, select Empty page. Templates provide a predefined structure for specific types of content.
  5. The new page opens in edit mode. Add your content and save the page.

Most pages are created in the main namespace. Other namespaces, such as Controlled document or Minutes, are used for specific types of content and provide dedicated creation options through the different dashboards.

Choosing a page title

  • Choose a meaningful title: Meaningful page titles help users understand the purpose of a page and make information easier to find. Choose clear and concise titles that describe the content. Single words can work well for general topics, while short phrases are often useful when they provide more context. Avoid overly general or unnecessarily long page titles because page titles are used in links and URLs.
  • Avoid special characters: The following characters cannot be used in titles: {,},&,?,<,>,\ and ,. For more information, see MediaWiki.
  • Use exact spelling: When linking to an existing page, use the exact page title to ensure that links point to the correct content. For example, [[Hello world]] and [[Hello World]] can refer to different pages. Pay particular attention to spelling when creating links manually.

Renaming and moving pages

As content changes, existing pages may need to be renamed or moved. Use the Move function for existing pages instead of creating a new page with the desired title.
For more information, see internal Link

Using subpages

Subpages help organize information within a specific topic. A page can have multiple subpages that organize related information into smaller sections, for example by separating a general topic from more specific information.
To create a subpage, add the subpage title after the existing page title, separated by a slash (/). For example, a subpage called Tables created from the page VisualEditor is displayed as VisualEditor/Tables. Do not use the slash character (/) as a regular character in page titles. The page hierarchy is shown in the breadcrumb navigation at the top of the page.

Other ways to create pages

In addition to the standard creation options, there are other ways to create pages depending on the configuration of your wiki:

  • Create page: Editors can provide predefined page creation options using the Create page function from the Content droplet.
  • Red links: While editing a wiki page, you can create a link to a page that does not yet exist. These links are displayed as red links and provide a direct way to create missing content. Selecting the link opens the new page for creation.
  • Browser address bar: You can create a page directly from the address bar of your web browser by replacing the current page title with a new page title. When you confirm the address, the new page opens for creation.
